Unplugging from Devices & Plugging Into Scouting: A Mom’s Take on Activities for Boys
Staving off the dreaded “mom, I’m bored!” calls mothers often hear from their sons can be frustrating, especially when your boys are begging for their electronic devices for entertainment. But Scout mom and blogger Jonna of A Mom’s Take doesn’t give in when her boys are restless for their electronics.
Jonna points her boys to spending their time with an activity that’s going to benefit them for the long-haul: Scouting.
Jonna knows Scouting is worthwhile because her husband excelled in the program and even became an Eagle Scout. Her husband would tell her all about the valuable skills he learned that he still uses today, so she knew Scouting would be a great fit for the whole family.
“This is a program I couldn’t rave enough about,” she praised on her blog.
Jonna has been a den leader for three years and says she’s in awe of the memorable experiences Scouting has provided for the group of eight and nine-year-olds. From learning about earth conservation and recycling to learning how to plan activities and serve others, the Scouting activities are boy-led, and Jonna appreciates that opportunity to teach them about leadership.
“The boys have so much fun while they are learning important skills and gaining attributes that will benefit them throughout life,” said Jonna.
There’s Something for Everyone in Scouting
First-graders and older boys aren’t the only ones who can explore the benefits of Scouting, though – kindergartners can join the fun now, too!
“BSA has recently rolled out their Lion program, which involves boys as young as kindergarten age in a variety of activities. The activities introduce the young Scouts and their families to Cub Scouting and exploring the world around them. This program teaches character development, leadership skills, personal fitness and citizenship within activities that are age-appropriate and fun for the boys and their parents. There really is something for everyone in Boy Scouts!”
Share this post with your friends and families not in Scouting to showcase why joining the program is a lifelong investment into their sons’ futures. What reasons to join Scouting would you tell your friends and family? Share them in the comments below and head to A Mom’s Take for Jonna’s complete story.
