Ideas for Home-based Scout Service Projects

Many Scouts, Parents, and Scout Leaders have asked about ways that Scouts can complete service hours for rank requirements during the current “stay-at-home” situation. Here is a list of timely and appropriate service project ideas that Scouts can complete with the approval of their Scout Leader.

  • Sew face masks and donate them to at-risk communities
  • Design postcards thanking nurses, military and service workers
  • Go on a hike and pick up trash along the way
  • Check with your local Ronald McDonald House to see if they accept donations of pull tabs from soft drink cans. If they do, have the Scouts organize a pull tab drive.
  • Make birthday cards to give to the seniors. Contact a local nursing home about starting a birthday card program or participate in a program like this one.
  • Make no-sew fleece blankets for children at a local homeless shelter or children’s hospitals
  • Make cards for members of the armed services who are overseas
  • Collect baby clothes and donate them to a women’s shelter
  • Help shovel a sidewalk for an elderly citizen in your neighborhood
  • Volunteer to pack food at Feed My Starving Children

While many organizations may have differing rules and limited access due to COVID-19, there are still plenty of ways to volunteer!
