Scout Makes Dream of Building His Own Campsite a Reality

Scouts love camping, and probably many a Boy Scout has dreamed of creating his very own campsite, complete with everything he’d love to have there, including a great view.

One Scout, Sean D. from the Boy Scouts of America Rainbow Council, decided he’d make his campsite dream a reality as part of his Eagle Scout project.

The Kankakee River flows through Sean’s community, and it has long been a place he appreciated. In fact, as a National Water Trail, the Kankakee River is a place that offers visitors a beautiful outdoor experience.

On its website, the Kankakee River Trail says visitors can experience “ancient wetlands, cliffs and canyons, wooded islands and the gentle farmlands of northwestern Indiana and northeastern Illinois along the 133-mile (160 km) Kankakee River, one of the cleanest rivers in the Midwest.”

Sean felt that more people should be able to access and appreciate the river, but one of the things it was lacking was a campsite for those traveling along the river to be able to stop and camp overnight.

Sean decided to create a campsite for those travelers in hopes that his project would also help bring additional attention to the river and all that it has to offer.

“We need these types of campsites,” Sean said. “I just wanted to help out with something that my children will eventually be able to enjoy.”

Sean worked with several volunteers to construct a campsite that features a tent pad, fire pit and gear pole. It is located in a beach-type area along the river, making it an ideal place for kayakers and canoeists to stop and camp for the night as they travel the Kankakee River.

“Sites like this are going to make the Kankakee River more of an outdoors destination,” said Mike Casagrande, Sean’s Eagle Scout project mentor. “It’s really exciting to have one now.”
