Let’s mix it up — try these four delicious trail mix recipes
If there is one snack that is just made for the outdoors, it is trail mix. The best part about it is that it can be customized to basically anyone’s taste or mood. Check out some of these “Scout Chef Kitchen” trail mix creations you can try — if you don’t like one ingredient, swap it out for something you love.
Classic Trail Mix
This recipe is perfect for on-the-go snacking and will satisfy all the cravings: salty, sweet and savory. Just combine everything together and that is it!
4 cups Chex cereal
1 ½ cups pretzels
1 cup M&M’s
1 ½ cups roasted and salted cashews
1 ½ cups walnuts
1 cup roasted and salted peanuts
1 ½ cup raisins
1 cup dried banana chips
Trail Mix Bites
1 cup old fashioned oats
¼ cup raisins
¼ cup chopped nuts (peanuts, cashews, walnuts, pistachios, etc.)
¼ cup mini chocolate chips
¾ cup peanut butter (or Sunbutter)
3 tablespoons honey
Combine the peanut butter and honey thoroughly. Combine the dry ingredients separately. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the peanut butter mixture. Roll into balls and then lay out on a baking sheet in the refrigerator. They can be stored in the fridge or a cooler until ready to eat. If you are taking them on a hike, pack into a hard container so they don’t get smushed in your pack.
Salty, Not Sweet Trail Mix
Again, super simple. Just throw in a bowl together and you’re good to go.
4 cups Chex cereal
4 cups pretzels (there are gluten-free options available if that is for you)
1 cup roasted and salted peanuts
1 cup shelled pistachios
1 cup walnuts
2 cup Goldfish (or a gluten-free cheddar cracker)
Get Fancy
4.5 cups rice Chex cereal
4.5 cups corn Chex cereal
1 cup mixed nuts
1 cup pretzels
1 cup bagel chips (skip for gluten-free)
6 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 ½ teaspoons salt (or seasoned salt)
¾ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
Combine all dry ingredients. Melt the butter and add seasonings (Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder and onion powder). Pour the wet over the dry and heat over low heat, stirring gently and constantly for 5-10 minutes. Spread the mixture over paper towels to dry, and then pack it up for your next adventure!
