Venturer wins 2017 Outdoor Inspiration Award for work in angler education
Some things just go together. Campfires and s’mores. Hiking and trail mix. The Boy Scouts of America and the outdoors.
So is anyone shocked, really, to learn that a BSA member has — for the third year in a row — won the Youth category in the Outdoor Inspiration Awards?
That in no way diminishes the tremendous work of Lillian Rose Weihert, a Venturer from the Chicago-based Pathway to Adventure Council. She was recognized from a list of nominees for her work in angler education through the BSA’s Certified Angling Instructor Program.
Lily is the president of the Pathway to Adventure Council’s Venturing Officers Association and is president of Crew 191. She completed her Certified Angling Instructor training in 2014 at S bar F Scout Ranch, part of the Greater St. Louis Area Council.
The Outdoor Inspiration Awards are presented at Outdoor Retailer, an industry trade show in Salt Lake City that covers all things outdoors. The awards recognize those whose efforts inspire others to engage in outdoor activities. Lily, who teaches other Scouts and Venturers about the joys of fishing, certainly qualifies.
Nominations for the 2017 awards were accepted late last year, and I blogged about the opportunity to nominate a Scout or Venturer you know.
Who has won this award in past years?
The award debuted in 2015.
In 2016, Venturer Jackie Timmins took the honor. She achieved the rank of Silver and was finishing up her last requirement for the Ranger Award at the time of her selection.
In 2015, Eagle Scout Matt Moniz was recognized. You likely remember him as the young man who saved lives on Everest after the deadly earthquake there.
