Volunteers check in at Wayzata Public Works May 21 for the city’s Dig-It Day. The annual event invited the community to help beautify the city by planting flowers throughout Wayzata. More than 90 volunteers were on hand for this year’s planting effort, which included over 26 locations throughout the city. (Submitted photo by Joel Papa)

City workers and volunteers of all ages plant a bare root tree at Wayzata Public Works May 21 to celebrate Arbor Month and fulfill one of the requirements for the city to be part of the national Tree City USA program. The tree planting also kicked off this year’s Dig-It Day volunteer planting session. The annual planting effort began in 2010 when the city was forced to make budget cuts to its public works department. Not wanting the city’s gardens to remain empty, a group of volunteers stepped forward. Now in its seventh year, the community planting event continues to help beautify the city’s gardens along Lake Street and in other public spaces. (Submitted photo by Joel Papa)
