February Roundtable – WHAT TO EXPECT – February 6, 2020 – 7:00PM – Minnetonka Community Center

Please join us for a great Roundtable on how we as leaders: Work with technology, teach our Scouts how to safely use tech, and discuss how we can work with our youth and parents to use technology appropriately. Cub Scout Leaders, Scouts BSA Leaders, and Venturing Advisors should all plan on attending for these three great topics.

Scoutmasters – Please bring your SPL or other Youth Leader(s) to this roundtable to be a part of the Unit Electronics Policy discussion. 

• Cyber Chip: Today’s youth are spending more time than ever using digital media for education, research, socializing, and fun. To help families and volunteers keep youth safe while online, the Boy Scouts of America introduces the Cyber Chip. In developing this exciting new tool, the BSA teamed up with content expert NetSmartz®, part of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children® and training expert for many law enforcement agencies.Leaders will learn about the Cyber Chip Requirements and how to implement them for your unit, from 1st Grade to 12 Grade, as well as how to recharge the Cyber chips annually.

• Cyber Bullying: We’ll cover ways to talk about Cyber Bullying. Cyberbullying is just what it sounds like—using internet technology such as instant messaging (IM), texting, social network sites (such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), or gaming systems for the purpose of teasing, humiliating, harassing, threatening, or coercing another person. How do you as a Leader help your Scouts and Parents watch for, and prevent, Cyber Bullying?

• Building your Unit’s Electronics Policy: Our youngest Scouts weren’t even born when the first iPhone came out. They don’t remember a world without iThings. Troops that absolutely forbid smartphones in Scouting — even confiscating them or locking them away — are fighting a losing battle.

Does the use of a smartphone as part of Scouting’s activities disrupt the experience, or can it be a “cure” to make our current experiences more relevant to today’s youth? Sometimes to find the answer to these kind of debates on how to go forward, it takes a look backwards to find the answer. One of Baden-Powell’s most interesting quotes is, “A fisherman does not bait his hook with food he likes. He uses food the fish likes. So with boys.”

Join us to discuss ideas on building your Unit’s Electronics Policy, what has worked for different units, and what may work for yours!
