What is a Jamboree?

2016_gph_national-jamboree_600x400Every four years, there is a gathering of BSA youth from all over the country that converge at one location. That event is called the National Scout Jamboree. The 2017 National Jamboree will be held on July 19 – July 28, 2017 at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia. In short, the 2017 National Jamboree will be an experience of a lifetime and will never be forgotten by those attending. You will meet Scouts from all areas of the country, have opportunities to go white-water rafting, zip-lining, mountain biking, and so much more. The event will cost around $2,499 and include touring in our nation’s capital. Scouts are encouraged to raise the funds for their trip by selling popcorn and other fundraising.

What is a Council Contingent?

A contingent is a large group made up for youth and adults from throughout the council split into several troops. In the case of the 2017 Jamboree, we will have six troops and one crew. Once split into your troop, you will train and prepare for the trip to West Virginia in July of 2017. The Jamboree committee does its best to keep the troops geographically based to minimize traveling time during Jamboree preparation events.

We’ve also created a council Facebook page about the Jamboree where we’ll be sharing pictures and all sorts of information.

When will we be leaving?

The 2017 National Jamboree is set to take place July 19 – July 28, 2017 in West Virginia. The Northern Star Council Contingent would leave around the 14 of July by plane and tour the Washington DC area for a few days before arriving at the Summit in West Virginia.

When would we return?

The Jamboree will close on July 28. The contingent would then travel to the airport together, and fly home. Most likely arriving on the 28 or 29

Why aren’t the dates locked in yet?

We are currently working with a number of travel/tour companies to get the best price possible on the travel arrangements.

How much does it cost to go to Jamboree?

The Jamboree will cost $2,499 per participant (adult or youth). This will include the Jamboree fees, food, travel, touring, and any sleeping arrangements during the trip. We suggest bringing some spending money as well for incidentals, souvenirs, etc.

How do we raise the money to go?

A Scout is thrifty and each one of our youth has the opportunity in front of them to raise money themselves and pay their own way. A great way is by selling popcorn in the fall. Scouts can come up with other methods of fundraising but are encouraged to discuss those with their Jamboree leaders and the Jamboree committee.
