Dear Scout families,
As you may have heard, a tornado tragically touched down Thursday at Little Sioux Ranch Boy Scout camp in Iowa. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected scouts and families. Pack 206 will donate a financial gift to the victims fund when it is established.
The scout camp hit was a leadership camp for a selective group of scouts ages 13-17 who were handpicked as being the “best of best.” True to the character which they had shown that led to their invitation to the camp, these boys' colors shone brightly during the darkest hours. Some of the older scouts laid on top of younger scouts to protect them during the tornado and endured additional injury for their noble deeds. After the funnel had passed, some scouts ran to the ranger's home which was demolished in the storm and subsequently cut through trees with chainsaws, eventually freeing the ranger’s family from the rubble. Other scouts who were able and mobile (although injured themselves) sprang to the rescue of the peers, freeing tramped campers, tearing their shirts to create tourniquets for bleeding wounds and applying triage skills in their first aid administration. (These skills were among emergency rescue skills they had amazingly been taught the day prior. Also the day prior, the campers coincidentally performed a tornado drill.) Lloyd Roitesten, Scout Executive from Mid America Council said “it is both my saddest day as a Boy Scout and my proudest day as a Boy Scout.” These boys were and are fine young men showing us what great leaders we have in the generation which follows us.
Again, our thoughts and prayers are with these affected scout families and scouts.
